A Muse for the Broken Duke – Extended Epilogue

“Andrew, do come and see! He’s taking his first steps!” Helena’s voice carried through the drawing room, laced with delight and excitement.

Andrew, seated at his desk in the corner of the room, quickly set aside his quill. He glanced toward the source of Helena’s joyous exclamation, his face breaking into an affectionate smile. “His first steps, you say? Our little Theodore? I wouldn’t miss this moment for the world.”

He strode across the room, his long strides purposeful yet softened by the warmth in his gaze. Helena knelt a few paces away from their son, her hands extended as she encouraged the toddler forward. Theodore, an adorable boy with Andrew’s dark hair and Helena’s bright eyes, was standing on wobbly legs, determination etched across his small face.

“You can do it, darling,” Helena cooed, her hands steady and open, ready to catch him if he faltered.

Andrew crouched down beside her, adding his own encouragement. “Come on, Theodore. Show us how strong you are, my boy.”

The little boy took one uncertain step, his tiny arms reaching toward his parents. Then another step, and another. His balance wavered, and he nearly toppled over, but Helena was there in an instant to steady him.

“You did it!” Helena exclaimed, pulling Theodore into her arms as he giggled with pride. She pressed a kiss to his soft cheek, the kind only a doting mother could give.

Andrew chuckled and ruffled his son’s hair. “Well done, young man. You’ve made your father proud already. At this rate, you’ll be running through the gardens by the week’s end.”

Helena glanced up at Andrew, her eyes sparkling with happiness. “It’s moments like these, Andrew, that make me so grateful. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day, or a more perfect life.”

Andrew reached for her free hand, intertwining his fingers with hers. “Nor could I, my love. It’s because of you that this house feels alive again. You’ve brought so much joy, so much light, into every corner of Layton Abbey.”

Helena smiled softly, her gaze drifting to the grand windows overlooking the sprawling gardens of the estate. Beyond the rose bushes, a group of gardeners tended to the blooms, their laughter carrying faintly on the breeze. The sight was a picture of tranquility, a far cry from the dark days when the abbey had felt weighed down by grief and shadowed by deceit.

“Do you remember, Andrew, when I first came here? How uncertain I was about what the future held?” she asked, her voice tinged with nostalgia.

Andrew nodded, his expression thoughtful. “I do. But I also remember the way you carried yourself, with strength and grace, even then. And I remember how quickly you made an impression on Margaret—and on me.”

Helena tilted her head with a playful smile. “You were so stern at first. It’s a wonder you ever confessed your feelings.”

Andrew chuckled. “I had no choice. You were impossible not to love, Helena.”

She leaned into his shoulder, her heart full as Theodore let out another joyful laugh. For Helena, this was not just a new chapter of her life; it was the sweetest melody, one she would never tire of playing.

Later that afternoon, Helena and Andrew strolled hand in hand through the gardens, Theodore toddling ahead with Margaret close behind, keeping a watchful eye. The day was warm, the sky an endless blue, and the scent of lavender and roses perfumed the air.

“You’ve outdone yourself, Helena,” Andrew remarked, glancing at the recently added section of the garden. A small fountain burbled softly in the center, surrounded by meticulously arranged flowers. “This space has become something extraordinary. The gardeners say you’ve inspired them with your vision.”

Helena chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I can hardly take the credit. It was merely an idea I had, and they brought it to life. Besides, I find tending the gardens peaceful. It’s my way of ensuring Layton Abbey always feels warm and welcoming.”

Andrew squeezed her hand gently. “And you’ve succeeded. The estate has never felt more vibrant, more alive. It reflects you, Helena.”

Before Helena could reply, Margaret’s cheerful voice interrupted. “Helena! Andrew! Look at Theodore! He’s climbing the little hill by the apple trees!”

Helena turned and laughed, her heart swelling at the sight of their adventurous son determinedly making his way up the grassy incline. Margaret stood nearby, clapping her hands and calling encouragement.

“Careful now, Margaret,” Andrew called. “Keep close in case he decides to roll back down instead of climbing further.”

Margaret grinned. “Don’t worry, Andrew. I’ve got him. Besides, Theodore is braver than you think.”

As they watched the scene, Helena felt a deep sense of pride in Margaret. Over the past few years, Andrew’s sister had blossomed into a confident young woman, her natural talents flourishing under Helena’s tutelage. She was no longer the mischievous girl who had once scared away every tutor with her pranks. Now, she played the pianoforte with grace and poise, her compositions gaining admiration even from visiting guests.

“She’s grown so much, hasn’t she?” Helena murmured, leaning her head against Andrew’s shoulder. “I remember when I first arrived, and she refused to listen to a word I said.”

Andrew smiled, his gaze fixed on his sister. “You worked miracles with her. I can never thank you enough for that.”

Helena tilted her head to look at him. “She just needed someone to listen, to understand her. And I was more than happy to be that person.”

“And now,” Andrew added, “she’s preparing for her first formal recital next month. She’s even agreed to let me attend, though I suspect she might regret that decision if I applaud too loudly.”

Helena laughed softly. “You’ve always been her greatest supporter, Andrew. She knows how much you believe in her, and that gives her strength.”

He nodded, his gaze softening. “Just as you’ve given me strength, Helena. You taught me to hope again, to open my heart after everything we endured. I’m a better man because of you.”

Helena’s cheeks flushed at his heartfelt words. “And I’m a better woman because of you,” she whispered.

As Theodore let out a triumphant squeal at reaching the top of the hill, Helena and Andrew shared a smile. The day was perfect, filled with laughter, love, and the promise of a future even brighter than they had dared to dream.

The following week, preparations for a grand gathering at Layton Abbey were in full swing. Andrew had suggested hosting a summer fête, inviting friends and neighbors from the surrounding countryside. It was an opportunity not only to celebrate the joy of the season but also to showcase Margaret’s musical talent as part of the evening’s entertainment.

Helena stood in the drawing room, inspecting the arrangements. Fresh flowers adorned every available surface, their colors blending harmoniously with the Abbey’s stately decor. Nearby, Margaret was rehearsing on the pianoforte, her fingers gliding gracefully over the keys as a melody filled the room.

“You’ve been practicing,” Helena remarked, a proud smile tugging at her lips. “That piece has never sounded so lovely.”

Margaret grinned, her cheeks tinged with pink. “I want everything to be perfect. It’s my first time playing for so many people.”

“And it will be wonderful,” Helena assured her. “Remember, you’re playing for those who care about you. Everyone here will be cheering you on.”

Margaret nodded, her expression softening. “Thank you, Helena. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do this without you.”

As Margaret resumed her practice, Andrew entered the room, carrying Theodore in his arms. The toddler squealed with delight upon seeing his mother and reached out for her. Helena scooped him up, planting a kiss on his chubby cheek.

“I see someone is already in a festive mood,” she said, laughing as Theodore clapped his hands.

“He’s been supervising the preparations outside,” Andrew said with a mock-serious expression. “I dare say he has a future in estate management.”

Helena shook her head, amused. “Or mischief-making, more likely.”

Andrew leaned closer, lowering his voice. “Speaking of which, James and Miss Withers have arrived. And James mentioned something about wanting to discuss… an expansion to the estate.”

Helena raised an eyebrow. “Expansion? Whatever for?”

Andrew smiled enigmatically. “Let’s just say it involves a charming little cottage near the orchard. They’ve grown quite fond of the idea of raising their family close by.”

Helena’s heart warmed at the thought. James and Miss Withers had become dear friends, their happiness a reflection of the love she and Andrew shared. “That sounds perfect. The estate wouldn’t be the same without them.”

“Nor would we,” Andrew agreed, his gaze softening as he looked at her. “You’ve built something extraordinary here, Helena. Layton Abbey isn’t just a home anymore—it’s a sanctuary for everyone we hold dear.”

Helena felt a swell of gratitude and love. “We’ve built it together, Andrew. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

The sound of the pianoforte drew their attention back to Margaret, who had transitioned to a lively tune. Theodore wriggled in Helena’s arms, clapping along to the rhythm.

“She’s ready,” Andrew said, his voice filled with pride. “And so are we.”

As the afternoon sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the room in a golden glow, Helena felt a deep sense of contentment. The life they had created was one of joy and connection, a harmony that echoed in every corner of their world. And as the fête approached, she knew it would be a celebration not just of the season, but of everything they had overcome—and everything they had yet to discover together.

The day of the summer fête arrived, and Layton Abbey bustled with activity. Guests began arriving in carriages, their laughter and chatter filling the air as they strolled through the manicured gardens. The scent of roses mingled with the aroma of freshly baked pastries from the outdoor pavilion, creating an atmosphere of celebration and joy.

Helena stood near the entrance, greeting each guest with warmth and charm. By her side, Andrew offered steady support, his hand resting lightly on her back. Theodore toddled at their feet, drawing adoring coos from the arriving visitors.

“Your Grace, Lady Helena, the Abbey looks magnificent,” one guest remarked. “And young Theodore is growing so quickly!”

Andrew chuckled, scooping up his son before he could wander too far. “He’s certainly keeping us on our toes.”

Helena smiled. “But we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The afternoon unfolded seamlessly. Children played on the sprawling lawns, couples strolled hand in hand beneath the shade of the ancient oaks, and groups gathered near the lake to enjoy the soft melodies played by a string quartet. Helena felt a deep sense of pride watching Margaret perform her piece later in the evening, her confidence shining through every note.

“She’s remarkable,” Helena said to Andrew as they stood at the edge of the gathering. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this self-assured.”

“It’s because of you,” Andrew replied, his voice low and full of emotion. “You gave her the encouragement and love she needed to believe in herself.”

Helena’s heart swelled at his words. “She’s blossomed, hasn’t she? And she’s so much more than I ever dreamed she could be when we first met.”

As the evening deepened, lanterns were lit across the grounds, their golden light casting a magical glow over the fête. Helena found herself drawn to the music room, where the harp sat waiting. Something about the scene outside—the glow of the lanterns, the laughter of guests, the warmth of Andrew’s presence—filled her with inspiration.

“I think I’ll play something,” she said to Andrew. “Would you join me?”

“Always,” he replied, taking her hand.

Inside, guests gathered as Helena began to play. The tune was soft and lilting, a composition she had written to capture the beauty of the moment. Andrew stood beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder, while Theodore clapped in time to the music.

When the last note faded, the room erupted in applause, and Helena rose, her heart full. She turned to Andrew, who looked at her with an expression of love and pride that took her breath away.

“You never cease to amaze me,” he said, his voice tender.

“And you never stop inspiring me,” she replied.

As the fête wound down and the last guests departed, Helena and Andrew strolled through the garden, Theodore asleep in Andrew’s arms. The night was quiet now, the stars shimmering in the velvet sky. Helena rested her head against Andrew’s shoulder, feeling the steady rhythm of his breath.

“This is everything I’ve ever wanted,” she murmured. “A family, a home, and a love that only grows stronger with time.”

Andrew kissed her forehead. “And it’s only the beginning, my love. Together, we’ll create a lifetime of memories, each one more beautiful than the last.”

As they stood beneath the ancient oaks, the future stretched out before them, filled with promise and harmony. It was a duet they would play together, forever in perfect tune.

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, dear! I am happy to hear that you appreciated the character development in this one! I, also, tried really hard to stick to the Regency elements of the story, so it is very important if you believe it does justice to the era!

  2. Thank you, Daisy, for an inspiring story of finding love despite having loss in your life. A hope for the future. I enjoyed the growth of Margaret, although I would have liked to see a bit of a relationship between her and Helena’s sisters. The extended epilogue was a perfect conclusion.

  3. Thank you Daisy Rosewood for a delightful story.
Music and poetry intertwined as highlights for Helena and Andrew giving those characters depth. Margaret’s exact age is not given in narrative, but my guess about ten years old when first introduced.
The Langley are a piece of work. Good description of horrible people.

  5. It is a lovely story full of romance and suspense. It is amazing how far people will go for money. However, the ship was sabotaged as it left New York to return to England. The witness tells them that the late duke and duchess had decided to break the betrothal. If they had decided that before going to America they would have told Andrew. if it happened while in America how did the Langleys find out in time to be able to arrange the murders as well as sabotage the ship. Would the testimony of one survivor be enough to convict since it is hearsay and the witness is not exactly a good person. The description of the period is not accurate. However, it is a good story and could have been improved upon. Also while Andrew is young and overwhelmed he is hardly broken. It is true that Helena brought peace and love in his life along with music.
